Who we are: Barre3 is a whole-body health lifestyle company reaching clients all around the world via its network of 91 exercise studios and barre3 Online video streaming subscription service. Founder Sadie Lincoln has empowered hundreds of thousands of people to live well in body and mind and earned media attention from Dr. Oz, US Weekly, Vogue, and more. We’ve recently started a small and ambitious in-house technology department (currently only three people) to create online experiences that have a dramatic impact on the whole body health of thousands of barre3 clients around the world. We’re a one-year-old startup living inside a seven-year-old startup.
Our Culture: We have about 40 employees in our home office, many of whom double as barre3 instructors. Showing up to work in yoga pants or taking a long lunch break to workout is completely normal. Collaboration is a big deal to us, so we try to work together in the office as much as possible. That said, we’re flexible around shifting hours and/or working from home as long as the work gets done. The technology team you’d be joining has a ton of autonomy, is full of friendly people with diverse interests and works in a quiet and ergonomic environment. Our office on N Williams St has excellent restaurants nearby, is easy to get to (and park) by car, bike or public transportation.
How we work: We follow a constantly evolving non-dogmatic brand of agile process to ensure what we’re working on is what’s most important to our very complex business. Our entire team, including designers and stakeholders, use an issue tracking system called Sprint.ly to communicate requirements. We aim to practice “outside in” TDD/BDD in which we translate high level user story requirements into cucumber integration tests, then drop down to rspec unit tests to flesh out functionality in our Rails web app. We follow git-flow, use continuous integration and utilize pull-request-based code reviews to ensure regressions on feature branches don’t affect stable work. After work is deployed to our production heroku instance, its impact is measured in Mixpanel to inform the next round of features.
Why we’re hiring: We’re in the process of combining our multiple businesses (online subscriptions, studio sales, retail, etc) into a compelling, robust and extensible online platform. The new test-backed Rails web app we just launched is a major step towards that, but we have an aggressive roadmap to take our business to the next level. We have the core of a strong internal team with Product, Project and UX leaders in place. We’re looking for someone to focus on architecture to ensure our product continues to evolve in a stable and maintainable fashion.
About the job: We’re looking for a software architect to guide technical decisions behind our online platform and specifically our new Rails web application. Day to day responsibilities include establishing best practices in our code standards, enforcing those standards by reviewing pull requests and of course doing quite a bit of coding yourself. While we have strong internal leaders in Product, Project and UX, we’ve fostered a collaborative environment where any input you have in those areas is most welcome. This in combination with the autonomy given to us by our stakeholders means that you’ll be at the core of a fast and nimble team where you’ll be empowered do the best work of your career.
Qualifications: There are only two required skills for this position. First and foremost, we’re looking for someone with strong experience architecting data models and design patterns for complex web applications with automated test infrastructure. The second required skill is communication. That’s vital for us to remain a high velocity dev team. Major bonus points for Ruby or Rails experience as that’s a technology we’re committed to, but that’s not necessarily a requirement.
What we offer: We offer a competitive salary based on experience and proven ability. We also offer full medical and dental benefits, as well as perks like a $100/month phone stipend and a free studio membership for you and your significant other (a $320/month value). However, the greatest opportunity we offer is the potential impact your role will have on our rapidly growing company. We like promoting from within rather than hiring experts from the outside and you’re getting in on the ground floor of a department with massive growth potential.
To apply: Start off by emailing a cover letter and resume to technology [at] barre3 [dot] com. Principals only, no recruiters please.
